Prabhakar and Sujatha moved to Ahluwalia’s house. Two rooms were given to them. The study room adjoining the bedroom could be used as the kitchen. But, Ahluwalia was not in favor of that idea and requested them to use their kitchen. Cooking both Punjabi and Keralite food was to be done from the same kitchen. They had to reconcile and concede. Paramjit Kaur, wife of Ahluwalia was an expert in culinary art, and her interest to learn south Indian food preparation was welcomed by Sujatha. She was curious to get appreciations for her capabilities and the presence of Sujatha for getting on the spot positive response was welcome. Both had decided to learn each other’s preparations with utmost interest.

If Ahluwalia went near the kitchen for want of anything, Sujatha cared to stay away from him, because of fear, without outwardly exhibiting. The scare of coming too close or touching her body was always alive in her. Many times she had expressed that to Prabhakar, but he had not taken that seriously. He even tried to make fun, saying irrespective of the modernity and higher education attained by the south Indian girls, they remain suspicious of all gents. She could not help, but to make faces to show her disagreement.

Days passed very pleasantly. Both Prabhakar and Sujatha soon became a part of that house and enjoyed their stay by sharing accommodation. The only difficulty faced by Sujatha was to keep an arms distance from Ahluwalia to thwart her fear. Her firm belief was that the ladies should always be careful to look after her to avoid unpleasant situations. Within a few days of staying together, she could master various north Indian preparations and she was proud of that. The interest in north Indian dishes grew in her and she gave full credit to Paramjit Kaur for that. Similarly, Paramjit also widened her culinary area of interest and specialization

The situation on the border was getting worse and the instructions were issued by the air force authorities to dispose of their families so that they can concentrate on defense matters and their duties, without the diversion of attention. All airmen took that seriously and send their wives and children home and made free themselves, but few officers preferred to keep their families with them, at their own risk and promise of not deterring their duties.

By the beginning of November, the border was on the verge of the warlike situation and the words started moving of impending unwanted situation; the war. Instructions were floating drawing everyone’s attention to be alert to meet any eventualities with all might. Everyone was instructed to be available at their place of work at short notice. Two teams of officers and airmen were made and one team remained on duty at a time and got relieved by the other team, once their period of duty was over. But, if the situation warranted, irrespective of which group one belonged to, all were to be present and that remained to stay as the standing order.
